Where Imbalance Begins: A Yogic Insight into Health

Health is not limited to physical fitness alone. It is a deeper state of well-being that exists across multiple layers of our being. Inner harmony is the subtle thread that holds these layers together and keeps us truly healthy.

In the yogic view, health is understood by identifying the root causes of imbalance in each kosha (sheath of existence) and consciously working at that level. These imbalances may arise from factual or perceived causes; however, the impact on our system remains the same.

Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)

Causes of Imbalance:
Improper food habits, irregular or incorrect eating patterns, a sedentary lifestyle or hyperactivity, disturbed sleep, accumulation of toxins, untreated injuries, and ignoring bodily signals.

Impact of Imbalance:
Chronic fatigue, gastrointestinal issues such as constipation, acidity, and poor digestion, joint pain and swelling, weakened immunity, postural deformities, and lifestyle disorders. When the body lacks balance, the mind also becomes dull and less supportive.

Prāṇamaya Kosha (Vital Energy Body)

Causes of Imbalance:
Shallow or incorrect breathing patterns, chronic or acute stress, emotional blockages, lack of exposure to nature, irregular daily routines, and constant sensory or mental stimulation.

Impact of Imbalance:
Low vitality, breathlessness, anxiety, restlessness, hormonal disturbances, poor circulation, sleep disorders, and persistent exhaustion.

Manomaya Kosha (Mental–Emotional Body)

Causes of Imbalance:
Negative thought patterns, unresolved emotions, excessive mental stimulation, hidden fears, comparison, childhood trauma, suppressed emotional expression, and unhealthy sensory inputs.

Impact of Imbalance:
Anxiety, frustration, irritability, anger, depression, mood swings, overthinking, poor concentration, and psychosomatic disorders affecting the heart, respiratory system, and nervous system.

Vijñānamaya Kosha (Intellect and Wisdom Body)

Causes of Imbalance:
Incorrect belief systems, lack of self-reflection, absence of values, poor decision-making, ego-driven actions, ignoring inner guidance, lack of study or contemplation, and negative influences.

Impact of Imbalance:
Confusion, lack of direction, repeated poor choices, diminished clarity, reduced self-trust, and ethical conflicts. Despite outer success, one may feel internally disconnected or lost.

Ānandamaya Kosha (Bliss Body)

Causes of Imbalance:
Disconnection from inner stillness, excessive identification with ego, lack of meditation, habitual engagement in misaligned actions (wrong karmas), absence of gratitude, spiritual neglect, and constant external seeking.

Impact of Imbalance:
Inner emptiness, fear of silence, dissatisfaction with life, lack of contentment, and inability to experience joy even when life appears comfortable. Bliss is ever-present, yet remains veiled.

True healing begins when we understand the root cause of imbalance and address it at the appropriate kosha. Working at the right level brings deeper, more sustainable results. Yoga, in its essence, is a journey of restoring harmony across all layers of our existence.
